This morning Jc of The Natural Haven Bloom put up a post about daily moisturizing which sparked up this post. Now I have been through so many natural hair websites and you tube channels on this matter of moisturizing and it just seemed like everywhere I went everyone was talking about spritzing hair for moisture daily, some even say twice daily. Having been natural for 2 years and 2 months now, I have learnt that this doesn't work for my hair at all. I would spritz a perfect twist out and watch the definition disappear and my hair would shrink to nothingness and detangling would just be a chore, I would spritz my twists or braids (generally protective styles) daily and my hair would get frizzy and difficult to take down. I could go on and on with the instances, I am sure you guys get the point now.
I decided to go with the motto "moisturized hair starts from wash day".I started using a bentonite clay mix to shampoo, I got a good (deep) conditioner, leave-in conditioner and moisturizer (I stumbled on these through trial and error of course) and started using castor oil as my sealant. So I would shampoo first, condition, spray hair with leave-in conditioner, seal damp hair with castor oil and finally apply moisturizer. I put my hair in twists so it can stretch out and it would dry this way. Using this method, my hair would stay moisturized for 3 days and then I would use a moisturizer and castor oil to re-moisturize my situation till the next wash day (usually a week or 2 apart). This works for me.
Now I am not saying that this method would work for everyone just like I once thought the daily spritzing method would. The point of this post is: Please my sisters (especially naturalistas as we are the ones with major moisture problem) find out what works best for your hair, be it product, techniques, tools, hairstyles; one man's meat could be another man's poison. For your hair to thrive, you really need to be patient and listen to your hair.
Till next time loves remain blessed.
NIKKI!
You hit the nail on the head. Daily moisture is not necessary for my hair either, instead it has worked against my progress. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you: one of my closest friends has natural hair and she doesn't spritz her hair. At night, she applies fruir of the earth clear aloe Vera gel lightly.
ReplyDeleteI have relaxed hair and these days, i hardly moisturize and seal.
Agreed! While I usually moisturize often (not daily unless my hair calls for it), I have not put anything in my hair for that last four days and my hair is just fine. I also haven't moved my one inch in the last four days as I am rocking a great protective style, an updo!
